In the course of Estate Planning with clients, we always discuss the importance of an “emergency file” to act as a road map for your Personal Representatives appointed under a Will, or Agents appointed under a Power of Attorney. (Emergency files aren’t a bad idea for our own personal organization either!) More of our accounts and personal information are stored online with passwords, and internet security concerns dictate the use of multiple passwords and the regular change of those passwords to keep our digital information safe. If you can hardly keep up with your own list of accounts and passwords, how difficult will it be for your Personal Representatives or Agents to guess the information? Solid planning includes more than Wills, or Trusts, and Powers of Attorney. The planning includes an emergency file, and this article provides a good discussion of the issue.
