Residents of Town election districts 1, 2, 4 and 6: get ready to elect the first Castle Rock Town Council representatives who will serve four-year terms.
You also may want to consider running for Council, for a chance to get involved in your community.
Anyone contemplating candidacy is encouraged to attend an orientation session at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St. Information about how to circulate and submit nominating forms will be available, and current Town Council members and Town staff will provide insight and answer questions.
Not sure which district you live in? Find a map at CRgov.com/votemap. In general, District 1 covers the western half of The Meadows; 2, Diamond Ridge, Sapphire Pointe and Metzler Ranch;
4, Castle North, Castle Highlands, portions of Red Hawk and Craig & Gould’s Addition; and 6, Plum Creek and Crystal Valley Ranch.
Registered voters who have lived in Town at least 12 consecutive months and who reside in one of the districts up for election are eligible to seek a seat. Prospective candidates may begin circulating nominating petitions Feb. 3. The petitions, which require 25 signatures, are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 17.
Town Council service is a part-time commitment, with monthly stipends of $650 for Councilmembers, $800 for the Mayor Pro Tem and $950 for the Mayor. (The new Council will elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem at its first meeting.) Council terms from here out will be four years long, per a 2010, voter-approved change to the Town Charter. Tenure is limited to two terms, or eight consecutive years.
As in past Town elections, the 2012 election will occur by mail. Ballots will go out to registered voters in mid-March. There are no Townwide issues on this ballot, so voters who do not live in one of the four districts electing a Councilmember will not receive a ballot. Voters within the voting districts who do not receive a ballot, or who need their ballot mailed to an address other than the one at which they are registered, should call the Town Clerk’s Office, 303-660-1367.
